The people building this know what it’s like when the system fails.
A small, well-paid team of people touched by suicide and institutional harm, working alongside volunteers who want to help families through the hardest process of their lives.
The paid team
A small team, paid well.
We keep our paid staff minimal, and we pay them well. Our team is drawn from people who have been touched by suicide or institutional harm:
Family members who have lost veterans to suicide
Suicide survivors themselves
People who have experienced institutional harm
The people working on these systems should know what it’s like to experience a failure of the system — and why it’s so important to get it right.
Their story is theirs
Sharing that history is always a person’s own choice.
Beyond Behind The 22
Trained to build their own micro-business.
We don’t only hire people. We train them to run their own independent micro-businesses, so they can take their skills into the organizations that serve this community.
Work with us, and get paid well
Learn advocacy, research, analytics, and Microsoft technologies by doing real work, on a schedule that can flex around grief and recovery.
Build an independent micro-business
We teach the business side too, so the skills you build belong to you and can go wherever you do.
Carry it into the systems that need it
Work inside organizations that serve veterans, service members, first responders, and their families, as someone who knows what failure feels like. The more of those people inside the system, the better it can get.
Volunteers
Volunteers who walk alongside families.
Supporting families after a loss
Our goal is to have retired first responders help with intake for families who have lost a loved one to suicide. Together, we can support the family through everything they’re entitled to.
If that isn’t happening, we help them advocate for the services that are supposed to be happening.
People who walk alongside someone through operational, policy, and workflow advocacy: the specific, unglamorous work of pushing a broken process to change. That kind of support doesn’t currently exist for this community. We intend to build it.
What volunteers are not
Volunteers are not lawyers, clinicians, or crisis responders, and they don’t give legal or medical advice. What a family shares, and with whom, is always their choice. If someone is in crisis, call or text 988, then press 1.
