Individuals and families
Your documents become one organized profile, instead of a stack you rebuild every time.
Mutual aid & research
Behind The 22 is a mutual-aid and research organization for veterans, service members, first responders, and their families. We’re building free tools that organize your records into one profile you control and can share with the people helping you — so nothing gets missed and you don’t have to start over every time.
Who it’s for
If you need support
Your documents become one organized profile, instead of a stack you rebuild every time.
A profile that follows you means each new office can start from what’s already documented.
Attorneys, benefits VSOs, and homeless-services case workers can work from the same organized picture, when the person chooses to share it with them.
Understand what happened at the operational level and what options you may have next.
If you want to help, or work with us
A free public library of published research data that anyone can search, analyze, and check for themselves.
Findings for your area, and what to focus on.
The people we serve never pay. And no funder gets to decide what our evidence says.
Retired first responders, advocates, and people with lived experience of suicide loss or institutional harm.
The platform
Veterans, service members, first responders, and their families deserve care that works. We study where care, benefits, and oversight systems break down, and we build free tools so people don’t have to face those systems alone. Our full platform is opening in stages.
Answer questions about your history and get back a personal guide to what may be worth following up on with your care. No email required.
Available nowUpload any document — medical, benefits, and more — and, in the future, connect directly to your medical records. It organizes everything and pulls out the key parts, so complex cases are easier to navigate.
Launching this weekUses your profile to support an individual or a family, so nothing gets missed and no one repeats the same history. Automates forms and appointment summaries. Versions for caregivers, attorneys, service providers, and more.
Coming later this yearCheck-ins tailored to a new or ongoing medication and your profile, with the people you choose told if something is wrong — and what to do. Built to turn boxed warnings into real-life safety.
PlannedA dashboard for your circle and, if you choose, local first responders: who might need support, with lead time, and how to help. You can revoke it at any time.
PlannedSelf-advocacy coaching in your pocket, to help you handle operational hurdles before a hard situation turns into a crisis.
Coming soonBuilt for the hard cases
In our experience, most tools for veterans, service members, and first responders assume mild, single-issue problems. Behind The 22 recognizes the operational issues that happen when injuries are complex, moderate, or severe — multiple injuries, multiple exposures, and multiple systems that don’t talk to each other — because we’ve lived it.
It’s your data. You should feel empowered by it, not overwhelmed.
Support for mild risk is absolutely needed, and we’re not saying otherwise. But we’re also built for moderate and severe risk, and for catching it sooner — because Behind The 22 has a stake in your life, not in an institution. Who we’re built for →
Beyond the individual
The same information that helps a person navigate their own care also shows us where the system keeps failing. We turn those patterns into something that can actually be fixed — and we’re building ways to prepare for the worst day, too.
We translate the red flags that keep showing up in de-identified data into the specific root causes behind them, so the fix targets the real problem.
A future option to share what you choose from your profile with law enforcement and other responders, so in a crisis they know what’s going on and what helps.
PlannedChoose who inherits access to your profile after your death, and record what you want, so your family has a guided path and the evidence already organized.
PlannedA planned portal where Congress and other oversight bodies can see de-identified findings for their area — and what to focus on first.
PlannedWhy we exist
“I started Behind The 22 to get better care for my husband, who has extensive head and spine injuries, along with toxic exposure. These failures almost took him from me — more than once. His time now is for resting and recovering. Mine is for fighting to get him, and people like him, care that’s better, more accessible, and safer. I don’t ever want another family to go through what we’ve been through — especially when so much of it could have been prevented with the right care in the first place.”

Your privacy
You decide who sees your profile, and you can change that later. Anything we use for research is de-identified first. Our free screeners ask about what happened, not who you are.
Not sure where to start? Take a free screener, or tell us what’s going on in your own words and we’ll help you find the right starting point.
